چکیده

Surface passivation engineering is an imperative way to improve photoelectrode performance for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. To the best of our knowledge, it has never been systematically reviewed in a feature article. In this review, we summarize various materials and their preparation, characterizations by PEC measurements some related spectral technologies. We highlight features effect that separate from other modifications, such as cocatalyst decoration, demonstrate significant progress combining surface with interfacial modification strategies rational design photoelectrodes. Ideas future research on improving photoelectrodes are also proposed.

Effect of Surface Passivation on Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Performance of WO3 Vertical Plate-Like Films

WO3 vertical plate-like arrays provide a direct pathway for charge transport, and thus hold great potential as working electrodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, surface recombination due to surface defects hinders the performance improvement. In this work, WO3 vertical plate-like arrays films with HfO2 passivation layer were fabricated via a simple dip-coating method. ...

Synergistic Effect of Surface Plasmonic particles and Surface Passivation layer on ZnO Nanorods Array for Improved Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

One-dimensional zinc oxide nanorods array exhibit excellent electron mobility and thus hold great potential as photoanode for photoelelctrochemical water splitting. However, the poor absorption of visible light and the prominent surface recombination hider the performance improvement. In this work, Au nanoparticles and aluminium oxide were deposited onto the surface of ZnO nanorods to improve t...

Improving BiVO4 photoanodes for solar water splitting through surface passivation.

BiVO4 has shown great potential as a semiconductor photoanode for solar water splitting. Significant improvements made during recent years allowed researchers to obtain a photocurrent density of up to 4.0 mA cm(-2) (AM1.5 sunlight illumination, 1.23 VRHE bias). For further improvements of the BiVO4 photoelectrodes, a deep understanding of the processes occurring at the BiVO4-H2O interface is cr...

Efficiency limits for photoelectrochemical water-splitting

Theoretical limiting efficiencies have a critical role in determining technological viability and expectations for device prototypes, as evidenced by the photovoltaics community's focus on detailed balance. However, due to their multicomponent nature, photoelectrochemical devices do not have an equivalent analogue to detailed balance, and reported theoretical efficiency limits vary depending on...

Crystallinity Engineering of Hematite Nanorods for High‐Efficiency Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

An effective strategy to overcome the morphology evolution of hematite nanorods under high-temperature activation is presented, via tuning the crystallinity and sintering temperature by substrate modification. It is demonstrated that the as-prepared doping-free hematite nanorods with fine nanostructures obtain a significantly higher photocurrent density of 2.12 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus RHE, due...
